Curcumas – Red Leather Stems on a Dramatic Tropical

In decades gone by, women stepped out on the wild side by donning red leather pants.  Curcumas already extend a sense of tropical mystery and energy when add to a flower arrangement.  Some species of this gorgeous flowers are donning red leather pants to take it up a notch.  Ruby Ginger and Scarlet Fever are two variations of curcuma that have brilliant red stems supporting the stunning tropical blooms.  The large scale blooms have a tulip or cone shape and intense colour patterns.  The leaves on these versions are oversized and green, with a traditional leaf shape, unlike the rigid leaf structures of ordinary curcumas.

The magenta or hot pink blossoms are enhanced by the ruby stems on these rare curcumas rather than clashing with them.  The pinks and reds are intensified and made more energetic, a great addition to flower arrangements for all occasions, but especially those in the late spring and early summer.

The Magic of Orienpet Hybrid Lilies

Most gardeners and flower lovers have heard of Oriental lilies.  These magical blooms are filled with dramatic contrast and exotic intense colour.  However, many people aren’t familiar with Orienpet hybrids.  A cross between the Oriental lily and the Trumpet (or Aurelian) lily, Orienpet’s beautiful blooms that perform well for growers and are hardy.  They are characterized by petals that curl back toward the stem, while pollen stems shoot out away from the centre of the blossom.

Often these lilies hang downward from the stem and have more intense colour toward the centre of the bloom.  They are known for intense colour, like hot pink and deep orange, but there are even some that have rich rust tones, golden yellows, and maroons.  There are typically several colours on a single blossom, lighter around the edges of the petals and deepening toward the centre.  The pollen stems can offer their own burst of colour with greenish yellow stems and bunches of pollen in rust, golden yellow, or maroon.

Caring for Cut Tulips

The tulip is a very unique flower.  One of the most amazing things about it is that it will continue to grow after it has been cut.  Tulips arranged straight up and down in a vase will often curve, lean, or change positions in a very small amount of time due to this phenomenon.  However, this does not mean that the tulips are wilting or going bad.  Simply trim the ends of the stems a bit and replace in the vase.  This is best done under water with a clean, sharp knife to minimize oxygen entering the veins of the plant.  A diagonal cut above any white portion of the stem is ideal.

Tulips can last for five to eight days when chosen well and cared for properly.  The blooms should be closed (in buds that are starting to show colour) when chosen for an extended life in the vase.  A clean vase should be used and water should be replenished daily as the tulip is usually a ‘heavy drinker.’  Given the right care, these beautiful flowers will provide beauty and cheer to any room.
